CHINO - An hour before the kickoff to open Mt. Baldy League play for Chino, a rainbow appeared in the eastern sky. Turns out the pot of gold was in the Chaffey end zone.
Chino, winless a year ago, extended its winning streak to 4-0 for the season with a stunning and dominating 47-16 victory over the Tigers. Before many in the Homecoming crowd got comfortable, the Cowboys (4-0, 1-0) were ahead by 14 points and would add another seven points before the quarter ended.
"We had plenty of motivation," said Xavier Brown, who referred to 2009's mark of 0-10. "We wanted to send a message to the Mt. Baldy League that we're going to compete."
Brown was the main beneficiary of an offensive line that rolled up 363 total yards. He rushed a dozen times for 151 yards and scored four times, all in the first half as Chino ended the suspense with a 34-0 lead.
"Give the credit to the (assistant) coaches and the kids," said Chino head coach Matt McCain. "The kids bought in from day one, they've given us everything they had.
"Our kids have a lot of pride."
Perhaps the most surprising aspect of the contest was Chino's ability to physically outplay the Tigers. Chaffey has long used its physical assets in battling for the Mt. Baldy title in the past.
"They are very physical," McCain said of Chaffey, "but we had a very physical week of practice. We hit the weight room hard. "I'm proud of the way our defense played against them and our offense was just explosive. But we have to keep the big picture in mind, we have to play better each week."
Chaffey head coach Chris Brown was almost speechless.
"I'm shocked that we were dominated up front," said Brown. "We have to get this thing turned out. We missed too many tackles and blocks.
"They utilized their talent well, moved them around. The bottom line was that they were the better team. Sometimes you just don't have an answer. Right now, we have to evaluate what we are doing."
Chino used field advantage to jump out quickly, Brown capped a 45-yard drive on a 21-yard score and later crashed in from he six to cap a 26-yard possession. Quarterback Sean Molles, who hit 14 of 21 for 199 yards and three TDs, connected with Promise Amadi for a 18-yard score.
In the second quarter, Molles and Brown connected for a 6-yard score that featured 40 yards of running and Brown added a 21-yard run for six.
Chaffey rushed for 268 total yards, the majority in the second half.
